Founder, owner and head coach. Twenty years of building surf programs, still first to check the banks each morning.
surfcamps.co.nz is the camps, tours and stays home of Aotearoa Surf, teaching New Zealand to surf since 2002.
Aotearoa Surf started with a simple idea on a quiet Northland beach: surfing is for everyone, not just the kids who grow up with a board under the house. Two decades later the family includes surf schools at Te Arai, Orewa and Christchurch, the eco pod village on the Te Arai hillside, the surf lodge in the heart of Mangawhai Heads, and more than a thousand five star reviews from people who caught their first wave with us.
Camps are where it all comes together. A week at Ultimate Surf Camp, a weekend on a Surf Tour or a Surf & Stay with the family is not just a holiday; it is how someone becomes a surfer for life. That is the version of surfing we started this company for.
Anyone can push you into a wave. Our coaching is built to make you independent: reading banks and rips, understanding conditions and boards, knowing when to paddle and when to watch. You leave able to surf without us, which we consider the whole point.
We run beach cleanups, use reef-friendly sunscreen and eco wax, and put ocean care into every program we teach. Respect for the coast is part of the curriculum, not a footnote.
Qualmark GOLD certified, Surfing NZ recognised, ISA qualified instructors, first aid trained and police checked, with target water ratios published on every program. Twenty plus years of camps without a notable incident is a record we protect fiercely.
